Nice try, but then why did 3.5 million buy "Stripped," which came after VL as well and actually sold more than "Bridges," too? And by your logic, the reason "Emotional Rescue" didn't sell that well is because the fans were disappointed in "Some Girls." If anything, the only reason ER and B2B sold as many as they did was because they were riding the waves of the excellence that preceded them. That's why "No Security" only sold 250,000. It followed on the heels of B2B, and could only must 1/10th the sales. That's why this collapsing into a black hole metaphor is probably quite accurate.
"Voodoo Lounge" was their last masterpiece. The general public knows it; in the last year, increasing numbers of hard core Stones fans know it--hell, it even won this summer's board poll. And I didn't even get to vote. Nor did several other VL fans I know.
B2B was like a punch in the stomach after the astonishingly outstanding VL. It was like
getting your teeth suddenly knocked out by your best friend. That's why it failed to sell.
And that's why we are, indeed, now lving in a post-Stones world. Where could they possible
go from here? They'll have to stop.
