Exile has lots more filler than VL. The songs also sound basically all the same--mainly because of horn abuse--and, naturally, Charlie is turned way too low and we aren't at the stage yet where he's driving the band. At best, Exile is about on a par with VL but doesn't benefit from the latter's eclecticism, diversity, driving rhythms, and superior production.
As far as arguing that "Goat's Head Soup" is better than VL, that's just flat-out ridiculous. In fact, "Goat's Head Soup" may be the single worst album they've ever recorded, at least since "Beggars."
