Good question! As near as I can figure it, "sports" is a thinly veiled metaphor for latent homo-eroticism (all the tight pants and ass-patting, grunting and shoulder pads) based on a stylized imitation of warfare and/or homosexual sex acts. Take wrestling, for example -- trace it back to its roots and you have two Greek guys, naked and greased up, fighting over who gets to be on top. Football? One guy bends over in tight pants while another guy reaches up between his legs to grab the pigskin. Golf? You HAVE to be gay to dress like that!
Not that there's anything WRONG with that. It's just the denial that makes it so funny.
