Cool post, and lots of well-considered opinions. Ah, yes, that's right...that's the sort of thing that made this place great to begin with! I had almost forgotten!
I agree with much of what you've said, but I'm not so sure there IS a recipe for a classic album.

: 1) Get back to basics. Take a hint from Paul McCartney's new album.

Yeah, it IS a breath of fresh air, isn't it?

The Stones don't need 25 takes for one song...

That's just not the way the Stones have EVER worked. Listen to studio out-takes from ANY era: they often play CRAP for weeks before the magic happens. Keith literally played the riff for "Tumblin' Dice" for something like a day and a half straight before the sublime Exile version happened.

: 2) Use only ONE producer. ...

I have no real gripe with Don Was. But come to think of it, Daniel Lanois could sure cook up something different-sounding with them...

: 3) Get rid of the session people! ...this puzzles me. All of the Stones' masterpieces have session guys helping out. I'd sure give a lot to bring Nicky Hopkins back from the great beyond. What they should do, perhaps, is go back to the type of liner notes that Beggars Banquet had...no credits, no who-played-what, no lyrics. Fewer distractions and less grist for the gripe-mill.

: 4) Keef needs to play his guitar like its 1969 again..

Geez, I thought he played like a GOD on the last two tours.

: 5) They got to want to do it.

I'm sure there must be at least a subconscious desire to come up with something that makes everyone say "whoah!", something that garners the acclaim of, say, Dylan's "Time Out Of Mind". I hope they do it, and that they do just what Bob did: keep right on playing.

: 6) No more than nine or ten songs on the next album.

As long as the extra 6 show up on b-sides, I'll go along with you on that one.

: 7)Ron Wood needs to be a big part of this album. We need his slide guitar all over it.

ok with me. Pedal steel too.

I think looking at Dylan's career arc is something the Stones should be doing to prepare for their twilight years.
