Brian's multi-instrumental abilities made a huge difference in the band's sound and
direction in the mid-to-late sixties, but in the context of the standard Rolling Stones
two-guitar stage show, Brian would have needed to carry his weight accordingly. First and
foremost this would have cast him as a steady 2nd guitarist -- playing lead, rhythm,
slide, or acoustic as needed, as well as the occasional harmonica or exotic
instrumentation touch. One limitation the Stones had developed by the late-60's was the
absence of a "red hot guitar hero", which was rapidly becoming standard fare for
the other top groups of the day. Mick Taylor filled that role admirably, especially for
the live shows. A brilliant lead player to Keith's rhythm riffing. Brian was superbly
gifted and versatile, but to an audience that had become accustomed to the likes of
Hendrix, Clapton and Page, the original Stones would not have sounded all that hot by
comparison heading into the 70's. I wonder if they might have continued to feature Brian
as multi-instrumentalist while simultaneously bringing in a new guitarist to team up with
Keith?
