: : Arguably, Mick Taylor was (technically and musically) too good for The Stones' own good. Side by side in concert, Keith's playing only suffered by comparison. And one had to consider whether the sound eminating from the stage was reflective of The Stones of old or more a result of the augmentation they got from Taylor, Nicky Hopkins, Bobby Keyes, and Jim Price. Visually he didn't call uch attention to himself, looking more like the stage left lamp post equivalent that Wyman provided for the other side of the stage. Musically, it's hard to dispute that he was the top of his league for blues and slide guitar finesse. I always fugured he sounded best in a pure blues setting, but the Stones no doubt hoped he'd take their sound in a different direction from the 60's version, and beef up the stage act to meet the live performance standards of the day. Ronnie was probably the best they could come up with to replace Taylor, and although he's no match for Taylor in the technique dept, he's probably a better match for Keith's style of playing.

: I like your analysis, but don't you think Ron Wood has fallen off a bit in the guitar playing arena??? I mean, when was the last time you heard the "Weave" between Keith and Ronnie??? Not much recently.

I was thinking the exact same yesterday. There was a great burst there in 77-78 of Some Girls and unreleased great ideas. Beast of Burden has awesome weaving, there's others as well on SG, and then came Emotional Rescue and everything went straight to hell. There's cool guitar moments now and again since then, but not a lot that I'd chalk up to any kind of intricate interplay.
