60's. When I was a kid most people who liked the Stones liked the Beatles too, and vice
versa. It's only NOW that there is such ill feeling between the camps. Of course NOW
Stones fans (most of 'em anyway) follow a living breathing entity while Beatles fans
worship at the altar of a dead god, so there is a difference. But, with regard to your
question, the Beatles & Stones were very good friends. George Harrison was at Redlands
the day of the Mars Bar bust and the police waited for him to leave. John & Paul sang
backups on "We Love You" and Brian played sax on "You Know My Name (Look Up
The Number)" and sax or clarinet on "Baby You're A Rich Man". Mick, Keith
& Brian were at the taping of "All You Need Is Love". They all hung out in
clubs together. Really, they were all members of the same exclusive boys club.
And lets not forget John Lennon's appearance on "Rock N Roll Circus". When Mick introduces the Dirty Mac, John gives Mick (who John affectionately calls Michael) the plate of brown rice that he's eating. Of course, joining John in the Dirty Mac is none other than Keef. John was also selected by the Stones to introduce them. This isn't a coincidence.
I thought I remembered a story that at the Stones release party for "Beggars Banquet", Paul came running in waving an acetate. Paul said something like, "I think we've just recorded the best song we've ever done." The crowd hushed, as the first public playing of "Hey Jude" floated out of the speakers. After the song was over, there was a stunned silence for a few moments. Then the crowd, Stones included, went nuts. This shows the kind of relationship that existed between the Beatles and the Stones. Instead of being furious at being upstaged, the Stones celebrated the creation of a classic song. This is also a testament to the Stones love, and appreciation of fine music.
Honestly, I never understood the animosity between the Beatles fans, and the Stones fans. Especially, when there was no animosity between the bands themselves. I love both bands. The Stones a bit more because of my love of Blues. But I certainly won't fault someone just because they like the Beatles more than the Stones. That's silly. Both bands put out copious amounts of great music. I say, just enjoy it man!
