since moonlightmile asked me for my first impressions a week ago, here they are. The album is like little the Stones put out before and, though I haven't heard the rest yet (I'm listening to an album every Friday, in order, in honor of Maxlugar), I'm guessing nothing they did afterward sounds quite like it, either. The songs sound less like Jagger/Richards compositions and more like covers, in the grand tradition of Rolling Stones cover songs. Having listened to it only one time, I can definitely confirm that it's harder to get into than the other albums. For one thing, every other Stones album I've heard, I've recognized one or more of the songs. I knew none of these beforehand. It's more than that, though. Every song is a very basic rhythm and melody, with heavy leanings to either soul, blues, country, or rock, very few mixes of these. I liked every song (is it just me or are "Soul Survivor" and "Ventilator Blues" seriously underrated ont this site), but didn't _love_ any. I expect this will change very quickly, as I'll be listening to it several times tonight and at least once a day for the next week. I'd say more, but there's a storm outside ("Ooh, a storm is threatening . . .") and I'm afraid the power is going to go out.
