: Do any of you play the guitar? I'm interested to see what somebody who does thinks of Keith, Mick T., Brian and Woody. There strengths and weaknesses.
I actually play guitar. Granted, I only really started half a year ago, but my whole ouvre of expertise is in the world of the Stones.
I think Keith is a stunning player when he's "on." His rhythm work is brilliant on most everything ("Luxury" and "Miss Amanda Jones" come to mind), and some of his lead stuff, like on Beggars and LIB, is amazing. But his lead solos are often very jagged and rough, and usually don't go anywhere. That one in "I'm Free" almost makes me disqualify it as my fave Stones song. Thank God for Mick Taylor's treatment to it!
Brian, on the other hand, is not exactly a virtuoso in any particular field. I like his more melodic solos, and many of his lead bits, like on "The Last Time" and "It's All Over Now," are wonderful. But Brian's best guitar work, of course, comes from his slide guitar. As Keno has said, how many white guys had you seen play slide guitar before Brian Jones? I actually saw a list of "the greatest rock slide guiatrists." Taylor and Woody were on there... BUT NO BRIAN!!?? AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!
Taylor is an absolute virtuoso when it comes to lead work. He's probably the best lead guitarist the group's ever had.
Woody, like Brian, doesn't really deal in any particular field. While Brian had the slide, though, Woody remains the king of rock steel guitar. His lead work really blows me away when i hear it on stuff like Love You Live. But lately, it hasn't been up to snuff.
That's my take anyway. Hey, who has the tabs for "Back Street Girl"? Anyone?
