Look, any argument that had existed for both of us has gotten list into a bunch of mixed up confusion about like 30 different things. I get your point. The lyrics can go overboard and you think it is/has alientated fans. I disagree. I think the longevity and general disapproval that these "scoundrels" are still around making tons of money has alientated many. The public is stupid and when lots of people say the stones are washed up alot of people believe it. It is only then that people use excuses to back up thier recent dislike for the band. "I used to love them but they haven't changed, they are still sex and drug addicts and this is the 90s, and their lyrics have become outdated". Hey everyone has their own opinion.
I just don't see why something like that is no longer accepted. Lyrics are lyrics. There is a border line where they might be offensive yet funny, ei star fucker. Sometimes that line gets crossed. Those in my opinion are the risks that the stones have always taken. Sometimes they go to far. That's the nature of the game. Either get over it or don't. People listen to what they want to listen to. Now as for Jagger trying to make the band more in with the scene, I have thought that he has made that mistake for years. That was part of what caused the rift with keith, and after a primarily unsuccesful solo adventure trying to write more poppular sounding music, he went back, not dejected but not the king of the world either. Jagger has always been the one who wanted to go to another level. Brian Jones wanted to continue doing blues, it was primarily Jagger who led them away from that. That was good. But there are better things than blues, and the stones went to that. I can't imagine a song being better than most of the stuff they have already written, I like the old way of doing thing in the 60s and 70s, and I hope they lean back to that. Obviously most of this has nothing to do with lyrics but whatever.
Finally, after listening to music all day, it is true, you can make great music without pissing anyone off. But the stones have always lived by making great music and everynow and again managing to piss everyone off. Its the idea that "your rules don't hold me". That's the stones, at least imagewise.
