Sort of getting back to what Hard Knox was saying, it's hard to say what the Stones WILL do in the future. Throughout their career they've made several "classics," and at several different points in their career. I don't think they'll do another series of albums like the big four, but no one else ever did, and odds are good no one else ever will. It takes a lot of things to make a "classic" rock recording, and one of the things is time. A song has to be played for years to be a classic, and I don't think Voodoo Lounge, Stripped or B2B have been around long enough.
Media is another problem. It's too fragmented now. When I was a kid (70's, and I have kids of my own, so I can use that phrase!) rock stations played either the top 40 singles, or album tracks. The singles stations were concerned with being current, while the album stations were more adventerous and threw in new content while using the enormous rock album catalog to ease the new songs and bands in. It wasn't uncommon to hear the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello, Yes and The Clash on the same station. Playlists are far too narrow now. Everything has its niche and its core audience. The public seems to want only what they know they like, and are willing to miss out on what they might like by avoiding any possibility of the unpleasantness of hearing something they don't like.
