The days of the classics in any popular genre--or for that matter, even jazz (I know nothing about classical)--are long gone. VL is a classic in terms of objective quality, especially if you include the b-sides. If it had been released in May 1972 and Exile in July 1994, all the pro-"experimentation" and pro-electricity crowd would have been asserting that B2B is better than Exile and that they'll never top VL again. Timing is everything.
