Montauk is a town and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern end (or tip) of the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2020 United States census, the CDP's population was 4,318. The CDP encompasses an area that stretches approximately 13 miles (21 km) from Napeague, New York, to the easternmost tip of New York State at the Montauk Point Lighthouse. The town itself encompasses a small area about halfway between the two points. Montauk is 118 miles (190 km) east of Midtown Manhattan.

The Montauk Point Lighthouse, located at the very tip of eastern Long Island, was the first lighthouse in New York state and is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. It was commissioned by President George Washington in 1792 and built in 1796. The tower is 111 feet (33.7 m) high and is a National Historic Landmark. The tower was built on Turtle Hill 300 feet (90 m) from the edge of the cliff; due to the cumulative effects of shoreline erosion, it is now just 100 feet (30 m) away from the edge.
