Painted Post is a village in Steuben County, New York. The village is in the town of Erwin, west of the city of Corning. The population was 1,768 at the 2020 census. The name comes from a Seneca carved post found by explorers at the junction of three local rivers.Elmira (/ɛlˈmaɪrə/), about 25 min (22.7 mi) to the east of Painted Post, is a city and the county seat of Chemung County, New York. The population was 26,523 at the 2020 census. Elmira's elevation is 860 feet (260 m), while Painted Post's is 942 feet (287 m).
