REVIEW
The last of the "great" Stones albums' to be released.
I hate disco, but "Miss You" is cool and includes the best bass ever played by
Bill Wyman on a Stones song. "Far Away Eyes" is a great little country
tune thanks to Ronnie Wood's slide guitar, who throughout this album shines, his best
studio work
ever with the Stones. Once again, some great vocals by Mick Jagger are heard on this LP,
along with a nice lead vocal by Keith Richards on "Before They Make Me Run". Also
some great harmonies from Mick, Keef and Ronnie on
"Beast of Burden".
This album also contains one of their best covers ever made,
in "Just My Imagination", and I must also note that the title cut, "Some
Girls", is tops, too, written in pure Stones fashion.
Like in their early years, the Stones had very little outside
help making this one, which makes you wonder if they should return to this formula.
About the only thing missing from this LP is a good hard rock tune, but the tune
"Shattered" comes real close to that.

SG Bonus Disc 2
The 2011 release of disc 2 from Some Girls is
too good a collection of songs to just be called a "bonus disc", but that's how
these former unreleased songs will always be known. Too bad, some excellent
numbers here, this disc is light years better than the overrated 1980 Tattoo
You release, another album made of unreleased songs from years past and
which was released as a stand alone LP.
The two best songs on here are two old time boot
favorite songs of mine, the country song "Do You Think I Really Care",
which most of us used to call "Yellow Cab", and "No Spare Parts", a song
that comes real close to getting a ten rating; perhaps in time I will
change my mind and grant it that.
Only question is, why did they butcher the
former "Petro Gang", retitle it "Petro Blues", and leave us with a
shorten version of what it was? It's the very same, identical mistake
the Beatles made years ago with their competed song "Dig It'. Sometimes
history does repeat itself, even if it doesn't need to.
But hell, other than "When I'm Gone", which is
just "okay", thank you Mick and Company for releasing these fine songs!

*Old Ratings vs. New Ratings
The oldest ratings that you see here are from
back in 1998 when I first rated the album for this site. Since time does change
one's point of view, I decided to listen to and rate the album again, doing so
in late 2005. In December, 2018, 20 years after the first ratings were made, I
rated all of the songs for a third time. Also note that I did not look at the
old ratings from 1998 until after I placed my new ratings here in both 2005 and
2018. Plus, the ratings noted are for the original album only, the bonus songs
released in 2011 do not count in the album's overall ratings and were rated only
once, back when they were released.
