ROLLING STONES LYRICS

  GOMPER

Recorded: August 10 - 12, 1967. Released on Their Satanic Majesties Request in December of 1967. Several takes were made of this one in the studio, with Bill Wyman playing bass on some takes and Brian Jones on others. But any bass guitar played, along with the sitar, are barely or not at all heard on the released album version. There is a unreleased, instrumental version of this song that clocks in at around 10 minutes; it has a lot less flute and organ, but more of the slide dulcimer. IMO, it's the better version and should have been released instead. Check it out on YouTube by clicking here. Plus here is yet another, shorter unreleased version of the song that's also up on YouTube that only features Brian and Charlie playing.

Vocals
: Mick Jagger Tamboura, Slide Dulcimer, Sarod, Sitar, Flute, Organ, Bass, Tabla & other Percussion: Brian Jones Acoustic 12 String Guitar & Backing Vocals: Keith Richards Percussion: Charlie Watts Bass: Bill Wyman (?)

GOMPER
(Jagger, Richards)

By the lake with lilly flowers
Wile away the evening hours
To and fro she's gently gliding
On the glassy lake she's riding

She swims to the side
The sun sees her dried
The birds hover high
I'd stifle a cry

The birds hover high
She moans with a sigh
