January, with 1.73" of precip, was the wettest January ever recorded in Crestone, old record was 1.65" in 1988. Temperature wise, it was also one of the warmest January's here, too. The brief mixture of rain and snow that fell on February 12, was the first time rain was ever recorded during the month of February in Crestone. This was the second time in two months for the winter of 2004-05 where such a record was set, as the rain that fell in Dec '04 was also a first for Crestone. January is now the only month of the year where rain has never been recorded in Crestone. One quarter of an inch of hail was on the ground after a hail storm hit on March 20, and then again on March 23. With only .61 of an inch of precip this March, nine out of the last ten March's have been below the norm for total precip for the month. A funnel cloud was spotted and photographed (see photo page) directly over downtown Crestone on April 24, and then briefly hit the side of the mountain, so officially it was a tornado. With this storm also came 1/2 inch hail stones in Baca Chalet One, sleet in downtown Crestone, yet no precip at all out in the Grants. On April 29 it snowed with the air temp at 52°F. This April turned out to be the second wettest ever, with 2.55" of precip recorded. Record high temperature readings were set on 4 consecutive days between May 20 & May 23, with readings of 89°, 89°, 88°, and 87°. Sandstorm (see photo page) hits Crestone and the Northern San Luis Valley with damaging winds on June 3. On July 20, Crestone set an all time record high temperature with a reading of 96.6° (rounded out to 97°), breaking the old high of 96°, which was reach only nine days earlier this year on July 11, and also on July 14, 2004, July 15, 2003 and May 31, 2002 This July was the fifth driest July ever on record and tied for the second warmest. This August was the fifth driest August ever on record. November was the sixth driest November ever on record. The 0.9" of total snow for the month was the third least amount of snow ever report in November. Seven of the last eight Novembers have had less than the average amount of snow that we should receive for the month. With only .31" of total precip this December, out of the past 11 December's combined, only one (2001), had above normal precip recorded. 2005 marked the seventh year in a row for below average precip in Crestone, with only 11.69" of total precip recorded for the entire year.
