recorded in inches. Heating/Cooling degree base: 65.0° Crestone Weather Notes For 2007: Record low tied on Jan 6 with a reading of -6°. Record low cold temps recorded on January 15, with a morning low of -14° (old record was -3°, set in several different years) and then on January 16, with a reading of -15.7° - which officially gets rounded off to -16° (old mark was -6°, set in 1997) and ties the all time low temp reading for January, first set on the 18th of the month, back in 1985. The temperature stayed below freezing for two full weeks - from January 13 to January 27.Record low temperature tied on March 4 at 1°. First measurable rain of the year (mixed with snow) falls early this year, on March 10, with .04" recorded. Record high temperature tied on March 13 at 65°, then the record high was broken the next day on the 14th, with a reading of 65° (old mark was 63°). On March 18 another record high was reached with a reading of 67° (old record was 65°). On March 22 the low temp was 34°, marking the first 24 hour period this year where the temperature stayed above freezing and the first time this has taken place in Crestone since October 8, 2006. After the first three and a half weeks of March were bone dry, the last 9 days received 1.14" of precip, making the month the sixth wettest March ever. It also was one of the rainiest March's on record, however, snowfall was well below normal. On April 11 a new record low temperature was set at 7.3°, the old record was 13°, set back in 1995. Then on April 14 another record low was reached at 10°, with the old record, 12° set in the first full year record keeping started in Crestone, 1983. Snowstorm hits on April 24. Storm started as light rain on the 23rd around 11PM and turned to snow at midnight (1 am daylight savings time). After it ended by late afternoon, 23.6 inches had fallen, making it the second heaviest one day (but not 24 hour) snow total since records started to be taken in 1983. Here are some snowfall rates per hour totals from this storm: 1.7" fell between 6:20am and 7:20am; 1.6" fell from 7:20 to 8:20am; 4.2" from 8:20 to 9:20am; 5.7" from 9:20 till 10:20am; 3.3" from 10:20 till 11:20am; 2.0" from 11:20am to 12:20pm and 1.0" from 12:20 till 1:20PM. On April 25, the morning low temperature was 18°, tying the record low for the date, which had just been reached on the date a year earlier. This April ends up the 5 wettest April ever recorded with 2.04". It also was the snowest April on record with 27" falling. Record low temp set on May 6 with a reading of 19.8°, old mark was 22°, set in 2006. A second record low was reached on May 24, with a temperature reading of 25.2°, old record was 32°, set in 2006. Wind and dust-storm hits on June 6. Top wind gust was 46 mph, while the Crestone Charter School (4 miles west) recorded a wind gust of 57 mph. Record low temp set on June 7, with a reading of 26°, old mark was 32°, set in 1993, and then again on the next day another record low was reached with a reading of 25°, this being the second coldest temp ever recorded in the month of June - with 24° being the coldest - reached on June 2, 1990. Second dust storm in the month of June hits late in the afternoon on June 19. For the second July in a row, Crestone was very wet indeed. Heavy thunderstorms hit in the afternoons of the last six days of the month, with 2.47 " of precip (rain & hail) falling in that short time span alone. The 4.52" of precip for the month ended up being the second wettest July on record, beating out July 2006, which had 4.24" fall. Only July, 1998 had more, with 5.74", making it the wettest month ever. This July was also the 3rd wettest month ever, with August, 1987 second with 4.64". Big hailstorm hits Crestone around 3:15pm on September 2 with 3/8" to larger than 1/2" hailstones (grape sized hail) which fell for about 20 minutes. Around 1" of hail on the ground at weather station (more in some other areas) with minor flooding and many gardens in town damaged. Temperatures dropped 30° during the storm, from 78° to 48°. Record low temp tied on September 25 with a reading of 25°, first set in 2000, and a record low broken the next day with a reading of 29°, old mark was 30°, set in 2006 and other years. A brief duststorm hits on September 29 at 430 pm and lasts about 15 minutes. On October 22 a new record low was reached with a reading of 7°, breaking the old record of 8°, set back in 1996. October, with a total of .18" precip, was the third driest October ever. Two driest were .04" in 1996, and .17" in 1999. With snow on November 23, a string of 32 days with no measurable precip came to a end. On November 25 a new record low was reached with a reading of -2°, breaking the old record of 0°, set back in 1993. Heavy rain fell in the early morning hours of December 1, marking only the second time that it has rained in the month of December in Crestone. Then it rained again on December 7. The low temp dropped to -13.7° (-14°) on December 18, breaking the old record for the date of -13°, set back in 1982. Then on the following day, another record low was reached, with a reading of -15.1°, breaking the old mark of -12°, also set in 1982. On December 28, the high temp was only 10°, the lowest maximum high temp recorded for any day in the month of December since record keeping started being taken in 1982. Temperature stayed below freezing for 265 straight hours (11.1 days) - from December 10 till December 21, when the high reach 37°, which would in turn be the last day of the year with a reading above freezing. In all, December had only nine days with the high temperature above freezing, with eight of those days falling in the first ten days of the month - along with the reading on the 21st.With 1.79" of precip, this December was the wettest ever. This was the first time since 1983 that more than an inch of precip was recorded in the month. 2007 ended up with 17.23" of precip, the second highest amount ever recorded.
