The town of Silverton is the county seat of, and the only incorporated municipality in San Juan County, Colorado. Silverton is a former silver mining camp, most or all of which is now included in a federally designated Silverton Historic District. Silverton is one of the highest towns in the United States, at 9,318 feet (2,836 m) above sea level. The town's population reached its low point of only 531 people in the U.S. Census 2000.
Coal Bank Pass, elevation 10,610 feet (3,230 meters), is a mountain pass to the south of Silverton and a part of the Million Dollar Highway (aka U.S. Highway 550), and is also part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. It has a steep 6.5% grade, and has a runaway truck ramp for trucks that lose control.
Molas Pass, at an elevation 10,912 feet (3,326 meters), is another high mountain pass south of Silverton and also a part of the Million Dollar Highway in the San Juan Mountains. Unlike some of the other passes on this part of U.S. 550, it has only a few switchbacks on it and is considerably less intimidating than some of the other bypasses (like Red Mountain Pass) on this same highway.
